Résumé

Dans les forêts publiques de l’Ouest américain, des réfugiés d’Asie du Sud-Est, des migrants latino-américains, et des ruraux américains se déplacent toute l’année pour récolter des champignons sauvages. Ils travaillent à pied, simplement équipés d’un seau et d’un couteau de poche. La récolte des champignons leur permet d’être “leur propre patron”. La durabilité environnementale de cette activité est reconnue, pourtant ces travailleurs, qui approvisionnent les restaurants et les marchés d’Europe, du Japon et d’Amérique du Nord, se voient régulièrement refuser l’accès à leurs lieux d’activité.

Up on the Mountain follows Southeast Asian refugees, Latino immigrants, and rural Americans on a year-round migration to harvest wild mushrooms from public forests in the American west. Working on foot, equipped simply with a bucket and a pocket knife, harvesting mushrooms is an accessible way for the pickers to become their own bosses. But despite evidence of the sustainability of the harvest, the workers who supply the restaurants and markets of Europe, Japan, and North America are repeatedly denied access to public lands.
